Jon M. Chu's box office hit, "Crazy Rich Asian", could make another estimates of $27 million to $30 million over the Labor Day Weekend, topping the domestic box office for the third time in a row.
According to Reuters, the Warner Bros. romantic comedy is one of the reasons for the August surge in theaters and it's still doing insanely good in North America. The movie has produced a three-day tally of $22 million across 3,865 locations, dipping only by 10 percent in its third premiere and earning a total of $110 million.
The blockbuster hit is the fourth film of the year to top the domestic box office for three consecutive weekends following "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," "Black Panther," and "Avengers: Infinity War." Warner Bros. also seized second place as "The Meg" earned another $10 million on 3,761 theaters -- which takes its North American earnings to $120.5 million.
MGM's "Operation Finale" debuted on Wednesday at number four with $6 million earnings in 1,818 locations. the political thriller is expecting to earn between $8 million to $10 million within a six-day period. The movie was said to cost $20 million and was directed by Chris Weitz, the filmmaker behind "American Pie, "About a Boy," and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." It stars Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley, and Nick Kroll.
Lionsgate's sci-fi action film, "Kin", was the weekend's final wide release and opened with a gloomy $3 million across 2,141 theaters. The movie features Jack Reynor, Zoe Kravitz, Carrie Coon, Dennis Quaid, and James Franco, and is on the path to making $3.6 million over the four-day period.
On the other hand, Sony's "Searching" earned $5.6 million when it spread to 1,207 locations. The movie, which earned a total of $6.5 million to date, stars John Cho, Debra Messing, and Michelle La. Cho and fellow "Crazy Rich Asians" stars, such as Henry Golding, rallied support when they bought screenings of the film. It will be facing off against Disney's "Christopher Robbin" for the fifth place.
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" continues to sit at the top five and is looking to stay put at number three with $6.9 million in 2,639 locations as well as a four-day total of $9 million. The sixth part of the Ethan Hunt spy series has garnered $206 million in North America.
아시안 배우 주연 영화 '크레이지 리치 아시안', 북미 박스오피스 석권
감독 및 주연 캐스팅이 전부 아시안인 영화 '크레이지 리치 아시안(Crazy Rich Asian)'이 개봉 3주차인데도 여전히 북미 박스오피스 1위에 머무르고 있다.
로이터 통신에 따르면 워너 브라더스(Warner Bros.)가 제작한 로맨틱 코미디인 이 영화는 북미 지역에서 훌륭한 성과를 거두고 있다. 이 영화는 3,865개 극장에서 개봉해 3일 만에 2,200만 달러(약 245억 원)를 벌어들였다. 개봉 3주차에도 매출이 10% 정도밖에 줄지 않았다.
이로써 '크레이지 리치 아시안'은 대형 블록버스터인 '주만지', '블랙 팬서', '어벤져스 : 인피니티 워'에 이어 올해 4번째로 3주 연속 박스오피스 1위를 차지한 영화가 됐다. 워너 브라더스로서는 자사의 영화 '메가로돈'이 박스오피스 2위 자리를 지키면서 겹경사를 누리고 있다.
MGM의 '오퍼레이션 피날레'는 흥행 4위에 올랐다. 이 영화는 '아메리칸 파이', '어바웃 어 보이', '로그 원 : 스타워즈 스토리'를 제작한 크리스 웨이츠가 감독했으며, 오스카 아이작, 벤 킹슬리, 멜라니 로랑 등이 출연한다.
'크레이지 리치 아시안'은 미국의 노동절 연휴인 주말 동안 3,000만 달러(약 335억 원)를 추가했다. 개봉 17일 만에 최고 흥행작의 기준인 '1억 달러 클럽'에도 가입했다.
한편 현재 국내에서도 큰 인기를 끌고 있는, 역시 아시아계 배우 주연의 영화 '서치'도 북미에서 선전 중이다. '크레이지 리치 아시안'과 '서치'가 각각 개봉했을 때 아시아계 배우 및 셀럽들이 각 영화가 상영되는 관을 통째로 빌리는 등 '훈훈한' 장면이 연출되기도 했다.
톰 크루즈 주연의 '미션 임파서블 폴아웃'은 개봉한 지 오래 지났음에도 북미 박스오피스 5위를 지키고 있다.
